If nothing was measured formally, use what you can defend, such as callouts per week or the number of repeat failures you closed out permanently.
Separate reactive fault-finding from planned and improvement work
Recruiters can tell within seconds whether you only respond to breakdowns. Give reactive diagnosis its own bullets (symptoms, method, tools), then a distinct set for PM strategy, condition monitoring and asset replacement. That split is the clearest signal you sit at engineer level rather than technician level.
Name platforms and voltages, precisely

These are the errors that get plant applications filtered out, and none of them are about typos:
  • Listing equipment instead of faults. A page of manufacturer names with no diagnostic story reads like an inventory, and interviewers cannot tell what you can actually fix alone.
  • Writing the resume as pure breakdown response. If nothing in it shows PM strategy, condition monitoring or failure elimination, you will be read as a technician applying for an engineer's job.
  • Burying 18th Edition, 2391 and ECS at the bottom of page two, where the screening filter that was built to look for them never reaches.
  • Skipping the shift pattern. Plant recruiters need to know whether you have worked continental, four-on four-off or on-call, and its absence usually triggers a phone call that could have been avoided.
  • Quoting downtime savings with no baseline. "Reduced downtime by 40 percent" means nothing without the before figure or the period it covers.
  • Claiming HV experience loosely. Say whether you were authorised, for which voltage, and by whom, because this is checked at interview and an overstatement ends the process.
  • Leaving out the CMMS. If your planned work was never recorded in a system, a maintenance manager will assume the paperwork discipline is missing too.

Two pages is standard once you have more than five years on plant. One page cannot hold the equipment list, certifications and project work that maintenance managers screen for, and a third page usually means old apprenticeship detail that could be reduced to a single line.
For UK roles, yes in practice. Most industrial employers treat 18th Edition (BS 7671) as a screening requirement for anyone working on fixed installations, and many add City & Guilds 2391 for inspection and testing. Put both in a certifications block near the top with the year you achieved them.
Give a before figure, an after figure and the period. "Cut unplanned electrical downtime on the packaging hall from 46 to 28 hours a month over two quarters" is credible; a bare percentage is not. If your site never measured it, use callouts per week, repeat failures closed out, or PM completion percentage instead.
The engineer resume owns strategy and outcomes, the technician resume owns tasks. An engineer's page should show PM programme design, root cause analysis, asset replacement planning, reliability metrics and often the development of other technicians, alongside the hands-on diagnostic work.
Include it if you genuinely edit and download code, and be precise about how far you go. There is a real difference between interrogating a program to find a fault, modifying existing ladder logic, and writing a new program from scratch, and interviewers will test which one you meant.
Around 12 to 15 years in full detail, then compress. Keep your apprenticeship on the page no matter how long ago it was, because time-served status still carries weight in this trade, but reduce it to the employer, the qualification and the dates.
