Summary
Database administrator with fourteen years keeping mission-critical databases healthy for banks and telecoms in Chennai. Owns the things nobody notices when they go right — uptime, performance, backups and security — and is the person paged when a production database is on fire. Took a struggling estate to years of unbroken availability and rebuilt the backup-and-recovery process so a real disaster test restored cleanly within the target window. Tunes queries and indexes, manages replication and high availability, hardens security, and automates the routine so the rare emergencies get full attention. Calm in an incident and meticulous in everything else. Looking for a senior DBA or database-reliability role with an organisation that depends on its data being always there.

Highlights
Years of unbroken uptime
- Took a struggling database estate to years of unbroken availability through proactive maintenance and monitoring. For a bank, a database that simply never goes down is worth more than almost any feature built on top of it.
Recovery that actually works
- Rebuilt backup and recovery so a real disaster test restored a major database cleanly within the target window. A backup is only real once you have proven it restores, which is exactly what most estates never test.
Disaster Recovery Overhaul
Disaster Recovery Overhaul
Jan 2019 – Aug 2019
- Led an overhaul of backup and disaster-recovery for the banking database estate, introducing tested restores and standby replication, which proved a clean recovery within the target window during a full failover test.

Key Takeaways for a Database Administrator Resume
Before the detail, here is what decides whether a DBA resume gets a technical screen:
- Name your platforms and versions in the header area. Oracle 19c, SQL Server 2022, PostgreSQL 16 and MySQL are all different jobs, and screeners filter on the exact engine before anything else.
- Lead with availability and recovery numbers. Uptime percentage, RTO and RPO you actually met in a tested restore, and the size of the estate you were responsible for.
- Prove you have restored, not just backed up. Every DBA claims a backup strategy. The line that gets attention is a real recovery, its data volume and how long it took.
- Quantify tuning with before and after. A batch that went from 6 hours to 40 minutes, or a query cut from 12 seconds to under 300 milliseconds, is the currency of this role.
- Say how big the estate was. 400 instances, 90 terabytes, 12,000 transactions per second, and whether it was 24x7 on-call with a defined rota.
- Show the modern side. Cloud managed services, infrastructure as code, and automation in Python, PowerShell or Ansible are now what separates a senior DBA from a maintenance operator.
Why This Database Administrator Resume Works
This sample is written by someone who knows what a hiring manager in a bank is actually worried about. Here is what it gets right:
- The summary names the four pillars of the job in the order the business cares about them, uptime, performance, backups and security, and then admits the reality of being paged when production is down. It reads like a practitioner, not a job description.
- The disaster-recovery line is the strongest thing on the page. It says the backup process was rebuilt and then proven by a real restore inside the target window, which is exactly the claim most DBA resumes never make.
- Years of unbroken availability is attributed to specific practices, proactive maintenance, monitoring and capacity planning, rather than presented as luck. A reviewer can see the method behind the result.
- Automation is framed as buying attention for emergencies rather than as a technology showcase. That is the correct business argument for automating routine administration and it signals seniority.
- The seven years at the telecom before the banking role establish scale and variety, production plus reporting estates, and the progression into a senior role owning a bank's databases reads as earned rather than granted.
- The Oracle certification is placed where it makes sense in the timeline, in 2014, just ahead of the senior move, and its description ties it to recovery and high availability rather than treating it as a badge.
- Composure is claimed once and then evidenced by incident work, which is the right ratio. Most resumes claim calm under pressure and never show it.
How to Write a Database Administrator Resume That Gets Interviews
DBA resumes are screened by keyword and then read by an engineer who wants to know whether you have ever recovered something important. Write for both readers:
Put the engine, version and edition where a keyword scan will find it
A recruiter filling an Oracle RAC role searches for RAC, Data Guard and ASM, not for database administration. Write a technical block near the top listing engines with versions, Oracle 12c through 19c, SQL Server 2016 to 2022, PostgreSQL 14 and 16, plus the high-availability technologies you have run in production: Always On availability groups, Data Guard, Patroni, streaming replication, Galera.
Describe the estate in numbers before you describe the work
Give a reviewer the shape of what you looked after in one line: 320 instances across four data centres, 60 terabytes, peak 9,000 transactions per second, 24x7 on-call in a one-in-four rota. Everything after that is judged against that scale. A tuning win on a 40 gigabyte database and one on a 40 terabyte warehouse are not the same achievement and only the estate line tells them apart.
Write one bullet that is purely about recovery
This is the single highest-value line on a DBA resume and most candidates leave it out. Say what you restored, how large it was, from what kind of failure, and how long it took against the agreed recovery time objective. Restoring a 4 terabyte database to a point five minutes before a bad deployment, inside a 2 hour RTO, tells a hiring manager everything they need to know.
{TIP}
Tune with before and after numbers, and name the method
Performance work is where DBAs prove technical depth, so show the diagnosis as well as the outcome. Say you traced a nightly reconciliation job with AWR and SQL Monitor, found a nested-loop plan flip caused by stale statistics, corrected it with a histogram and an index change, and brought a six-hour job down to 38 minutes. The method is what an interviewer will follow up on.
Cover the security and compliance work explicitly
Regulated employers screen for this. Name transparent data encryption, TLS in transit, key rotation and vaulting, privileged access review, data masking for lower environments, audit configuration, and the frameworks you have been audited against, PCI DSS, SOX, HIPAA, GDPR or ISO 27001. If you produced evidence for an auditor and passed, say so with the year.
Show that you have moved past manual administration
The distinction that decides senior offers is whether you build systems or perform tasks. Name what you automated and what it saved: patching 300 instances with Ansible instead of a weekend maintenance window, schema deployments through Liquibase or Flyway in a pipeline, monitoring and alert tuning in Prometheus and Grafana, and provisioning with Terraform on RDS, Azure SQL or Cloud SQL.
What to Include in a Database Administrator Resume
Some blocks are specific to this role, and leaving them out is what makes an experienced DBA read as a junior one:
A technical block split by category: engines and versions, high availability and replication, backup tooling, cloud platforms, monitoring, scripting languages and operating systems.
Estate metrics for each employer, covering instance count, total data volume, transaction throughput and the criticality tier of the systems.
On-call reality: the rota shape, the incident severity levels you owned, mean time to recovery, and any major incident you led as the database lead.
Migration and upgrade projects with the source and target versions and platforms, since cross-version and cross-platform migrations are a distinct and well-paid skill.
Backup tooling by name, RMAN, Data Domain, Commvault, Veeam, pgBackRest, native SQL Server backups with Ola Hallengren scripts, plus retention and offsite arrangement.
Compliance and audit exposure, named by framework, with the year of the audit and your specific responsibility in it.
The operational documentation you produced, runbooks, disaster-recovery playbooks and capacity plans, because in a regulated shop that artefact trail is part of the job.
Database Administrator Resume Summary Examples
The sample here speaks from an Oracle and SQL Server banking estate. These three take different engines and career stages, so start from whichever matches your own stack:
Entry-level resume summary example
Junior database administrator with two years supporting PostgreSQL and MySQL estates for a 40-person SaaS platform, moving into the role from application support. Handles routine backups and verified restores, index and query review, user provisioning, and minor version patching across 45 instances in AWS RDS and Aurora. Cut the nightly reporting job from 90 minutes to 22 by rewriting three correlated subqueries and adding two covering indexes after profiling with pg_stat_statements. Automated backup verification with a weekly scripted restore into a scratch instance, which caught two silently failing dumps in the first month. Holds AWS Certified Database Specialty and studying for PostgreSQL professional certification. Looking for a mid-level DBA role on a larger production estate.
Mid-level resume summary example
SQL Server database administrator with seven years across retail and logistics, currently responsible for 180 instances totalling 32 terabytes in a hybrid estate spanning on-premises clusters and Azure SQL Managed Instance. Runs Always On availability groups across two data centres, owns the backup and retention policy, and leads the quarterly disaster-recovery test that restores the order-management database inside a 90-minute recovery time objective. Reduced blocking-related incident tickets by 62 percent over a year by rebuilding the indexing strategy on the four busiest tables and moving reporting reads onto a readable secondary. Automated patching and health checks with PowerShell and dbatools across the whole estate. Seeking a senior or lead DBA role in a 24x7 environment.
Senior-level resume summary example
Lead database administrator with sixteen years on Oracle and PostgreSQL in financial services, currently owning a 90 terabyte estate of 260 instances supporting payment and settlement systems under a 99.99 percent availability commitment. Runs Oracle RAC and Data Guard across three sites, sets the backup and recovery standard, and chairs the quarterly recovery exercise that has met a 30-minute recovery point objective on every test for three years. Led the migration of 40 legacy Oracle schemas to PostgreSQL on Kubernetes, cutting licensing spend by 1.4 million dollars annually with no unplanned downtime during cutover. Mentors four DBAs and owns the on-call standard and incident review process. Targeting a principal DBA or database reliability engineering lead position.
Database Administrator Work Experience Examples
The sample's bullets sit in an Oracle and SQL Server banking estate. These sets show the same disciplines across other stacks, so borrow the shape and swap in your own numbers:
Oracle production DBA
- Administered a 22-node Oracle RAC estate on 19c across three data centres holding 74 terabytes, sustaining 99.98 percent availability across two years with a one-in-four 24x7 on-call rota covering payment systems.
- Rebuilt the RMAN backup strategy with block change tracking and offsite retention, then proved it by restoring a 6 terabyte production database to a point-in-time inside 94 minutes against a two-hour recovery objective.
- Diagnosed a nightly settlement job that had crept from two hours to nine using AWR and SQL Monitor, corrected a plan regression with a SQL plan baseline and fresh histograms, and returned it to 78 minutes.
- Configured and tested Data Guard switchover for eleven primary databases, cutting the documented failover procedure from 45 minutes of manual steps to a single scripted operation completing in under six minutes.
- Implemented transparent data encryption and unified auditing across the regulated estate ahead of a PCI DSS assessment, producing the evidence pack that closed all fourteen database findings without an extension.
SQL Server and Azure DBA
- Managed 210 SQL Server instances from 2016 to 2022 across on-premises failover clusters and Azure SQL Managed Instance, covering 38 terabytes for order management, warehousing and finance reporting workloads.
- Standardised backups on Ola Hallengren maintenance solution with weekly automated restore verification into an isolated instance, which surfaced three corrupt backup chains that had been reporting success for months.
- Cut lock-escalation and blocking incidents by 62 percent in a year by redesigning the clustered index on the two hottest order tables and routing 40 reporting workloads to a readable secondary replica.
- Automated cumulative-update patching for the entire estate with PowerShell and dbatools, compressing a two-weekend manual maintenance exercise into a scheduled four-hour window with automated rollback.
- Led the migration of 60 databases from an end-of-life 2012 cluster to Azure SQL Managed Instance over four months, completing every cutover inside its agreed window with no rollback and no data loss.
PostgreSQL and cloud database engineer
- Ran a 140-instance PostgreSQL estate on Amazon RDS, Aurora and self-managed Kubernetes clusters totalling 26 terabytes, supporting a payments API sustaining 7,000 transactions per second at peak trading hours.
- Introduced pgBackRest with differential backups and a scripted weekly restore drill, bringing verified recovery time for the largest cluster down from an untested unknown to a measured 41 minutes.
- Tuned autovacuum and connection pooling with PgBouncer after tracing checkout latency spikes to transaction wraparound pressure, and cut p99 query latency on the payments schema from 840 to 120 milliseconds.
- Built the provisioning and configuration pipeline in Terraform and Ansible so a new replica set could be stood up in 18 minutes rather than the two days of manual work the team had been booking for it.
- Migrated 40 Oracle schemas to PostgreSQL using ora2pg with a parallel-run reconciliation period, retiring 1.4 million dollars of annual licensing with no unplanned downtime across eight cutover weekends.

Database Administrator Certifications
Certifications carry more weight here than in most engineering roles, because employers use them as a proxy for depth on a specific engine. Match them to the stack you are applying for:
-
Oracle Database Administration 2019 Certified Professional
— Oracle The recognised depth credential for Oracle DBAs and often listed as preferred on banking and telecom postings.
-
Azure Database Administrator Associate
— Microsoft The current Microsoft credential for SQL Server and Azure SQL administration, replacing the retired MCSA Database Administration track.
-
AWS Certified Database Specialty
— Amazon Web Services Optional. Worth holding for cloud-first estates running RDS, Aurora and DynamoDB, though AWS has been consolidating its specialty track.
-
PostgreSQL 13 Associate Certification
— EDB Optional. The most widely recognised formal PostgreSQL credential in a field that otherwise hires on demonstrated experience.
-
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Certified Architect Associate
— Oracle Optional. Useful where an Oracle estate is moving to OCI, Exadata Cloud Service or Autonomous Database.
Database Administrator Salary Expectations
DBA pay tracks the criticality of the systems more than the years served, with finance, healthcare and payments paying well above the median. Official figures:
USD 62,000 – USD 85,000 · entry · US
Roughly the lowest quartile of the BLS distribution, typical of a first DBA post after application or systems support.
USD 85,000 – USD 125,000 · mid · US
The BLS median annual wage for database administrators was 104,620 USD in May 2024.
USD 125,000 – USD 170,000 · senior · US
Upper decile, concentrated in finance, insurance and information services, and in lead or principal DBA roles carrying 24x7 accountability.
Common Database Administrator Resume Mistakes
These are the ones that make an experienced DBA read like an operator rather than an engineer:
- Listing backups without ever mentioning a restore. Anyone can schedule a job. The reviewer is looking for evidence that recovery has been tested against a real objective and met.
- Writing responsibilities that read straight from a job description, monitoring databases and ensuring availability, with no estate size, no incident and no number attached.
- Omitting engine versions. Oracle 11g and 19c are meaningfully different jobs, and a screener filtering for a version they cannot find will pass on the resume.
- Claiming performance tuning with no before and after. The interview will start with what you tuned and by how much, so the resume may as well answer it first.
- Ignoring the cloud entirely on an otherwise strong on-premises resume, which reads as a candidate who has not touched a managed service and will need retraining.
- Leaving out the on-call and incident work. For a production DBA, how you behave at 3am is the substance of the role, not an aside.
- Padding the skills block with every technology ever seen. A screener who asks about a listed skill and gets a vague answer discounts the entire list.
- Presenting a security posture in generalities. Name the encryption, the access review cadence and the audit framework, or the compliance claim carries no weight.
Database Administrator Resume FAQs
The questions DBAs actually type into Google before they rewrite this document:
Engines with versions, the size of the estate you managed, a tested recovery with its recovery time objective, tuning wins with before and after numbers, high availability and replication technologies, security and compliance work, and the automation you built. The recovery evidence is the part most candidates leave out and hiring managers look hardest for.
Backup and recovery, performance and query tuning, high availability and replication, security and access control, capacity planning, cloud database services, and scripting in Python, PowerShell or Bash. List them by named technology rather than by category, because technical screens filter on the product name.
Use availability percentage, instance and terabyte counts, transactions per second, restore time against the agreed objective, ticket or incident reduction, and query runtime before and after. A batch job cut from six hours to 38 minutes says more than any adjective could.
Not to do the job, but they help more here than in most engineering roles because employers use them to screen for engine-specific depth. Oracle OCP and Microsoft DP-300 are the two that appear most often as preferred on job postings, and a cloud database credential is increasingly expected alongside them.
One page under five years, two pages once you have run a substantial estate, and rarely more than two even at principal level. Keep older roles compressed to two lines each and give the space to the recent estate, the incidents you led and the migrations you delivered.
Build a real estate you can describe. Run PostgreSQL or SQL Server on a home lab or a small cloud instance, set up replication, break it deliberately and document the recovery, then write those exercises as bullets with the same numbers a production role would use. Pair that with a cloud database certification and any database work from a support or developer role.
Starting from a blank page is the hardest part of a career change, so use our free resume builder to get the technical block and section order right from the first draft.
A DBA resume is about keeping production systems available, recoverable, fast and secure. A data engineer resume is about building pipelines that move and transform data for analytics. If your bullets are mostly about ETL and warehouse modelling rather than uptime, recovery and tuning, you are writing the other role's resume.
